Our History

Operation Sunshine, a 501c(3) non-profit, public service organization, was established in 1968 by a group of ladies in Greenville, NC, called the Church Women United. These ladies had observed that when young ladies ages 5-13 were out of school during the summer months, they had nothing positive to do with their time. Since these young ladies lived in single-parent homes in West Greenville communities, they were classified as “at-risk”. As a result, the Church Women United Group decided to find ways to ensure these young ladies did not end up in trouble and drop out of school. So, Operation Sunshine, Inc. was formed as an after-school and summer program. It was funded and supported by local church groups to provide these young ladies with positive educational, physical, and mental activities and experiences.
